A commemorative talk. 1st July 1916 saw the start of one of the greatest and most memorable battles of the Great War – in Britain it has defined our perception of the war ever since. This talk will explain how the battle came to be fought, analyse its progress and outcomes and consider its results in the context of the war as a whole. We will also have a showing of the film “The Battle of the Somme” released by the government in August of 1916, while the battle was still being fought and which gives an unprecedented insight into conditions on the Western Front
